Sandwiches are a quick and easy way to help ensure people in need have access to calories and nutrition. I always keep sliced meat and cheese in the fridge at my office so I can make them up to have on hand when they’re needed. 10 minutes, a typical loaf of sandwich bread, a pound of sliced deli meat, and some sliced cheese will make 10 sandwiches. Or make peanut butter* and jelly (*ask about allergies!)
I always look for relevant sales to get the most out of my outreach budget, and as of the date of this post, here’s the breakdown of my cost for these sandwiches:
- Sliced Bread free from my food pantry (I buy discounted bread the day I plan to use it otherwise)
- Sliced Cheese 1.99/16 slices, or .12 / sandwich
- Deli Meat $4.00/lb or .40 / sandwich
So the final cost for this batch of sandwiches was $.52/sandwich. I had sandwich bags on hand, so that was not an additional expense.
One final note: Don’t put condiments on sandwiches; they will make the bread soggy and not everyone likes condiments. If you like, you can include individual condiment packs.
